Welcome to Heartland
Jerseys, owned and operated by Jerry and Sue Spielman of Seneca,
Kansas. As our farm name suggests,
we are located in “America’s Heartland” in
the northeastern part of the state, just a mile south of U.S.
Hwy. 36, which follows the old Pony Express and Oregon Trails. The
region’s rolling hills and rich fertile valleys are home
to a large number of the state’s dairy herds.
Heartland Jerseys,
Inc. is an all-registered Jersey dairy established in 1988 with
the purchase of two bred heifers and has grown, down-sized, and
grown again to its present 353 milking cows and 266 replacement
heifers. A production sale was held in
May, 2005 where 45 cows and 50 heifers were sold at auction. The
dairy is preparing to host its second production sale on May
9, 2008. (See the Sale page for highlights of some of the
60 cows, 20 bred heifers and 20 young heifers being offered on
the sale.)
The rolling herd average for January, 2008 was 20,199
Milk, 957 Fat (4.7%), 743 Protein (3.7%). Heartland Jerseys is
currently ranked 57th in the nation for JPI (Jersey Performance
Index). The herd is also ranked 8th in the nation for fat
production and 10th for protein among its peers with 150-299
cows on the 2007 AJCA lactation averages. All but 20 cows
and heifers carry the Heartland prefix.
Milking cows are divided
into five groups: transition, two pens of high producing cows
3 years and older, 2 year olds and low producing cows nearing
dry-off. Each of the milking cows
consume 91 pounds of TMR daily, which consists of corn silage,
alfalfa hay, ground corn, whole cottonseed, Sweet Bran, molasses
and a protein/mineral premix.
All replacement heifers and bulls
are housed and cared for at or within one mile of the dairy. Breeding bulls from cows
in the top 30-40% of the herd are available for sale. (See
our bull page.) Top animals in the herd are flushed and
we are currently transplanting all the recovered embryos into
below average cows here on the farm. We hope to have embryos
available for sale sometime in the future.
